Lime Render & Plaster FAQs for North Yorkshire Homeowners
Listed buildings almost always require lime-based materials. Conservation officers typically insist on like-for-like repairs using lime render and mortar. We have extensive experience meeting conservation requirements.
For most North Yorkshire stone buildings we use natural hydraulic lime (NHL 3.5) for external render. This provides good weather resistance while remaining breathable. Internal plaster typically uses NHL 2 or non-hydraulic lime.
Lime render is softer and more flexible than cement render. It moves with the building rather than cracking. It allows moisture to pass through rather than trapping it. And it sacrificially protects the stonework beneath.
On its own, lime render provides modest thermal improvement. For significant insulation gain we can add insulating lime plaster or combine lime render with cork or hemp insulation.
Properly applied lime render can last 80 to 100 years or more. Many of the finest buildings in York have lime render that has survived centuries. Quality materials and skilled application are key to longevity.
